A Washington County jury recently found a former Beaverton resident guilty of multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse in a case that dates back to more than a decade.
On March 28, Scott Garrnett Boyd was convicted of two counts each of first-degree rape, fire-degree sodomy, third-degree rape and third-degree sodomy. He also was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse.
The case originated in April 2013 when the victim reported sexual abuse by the defendant. She reported to Tigard police at the time that she had been abused by the defendant multiple times over the past eight years, according to the Washington County District Attorney’s Office. That case involved various charges including the 2004 rape of a child under 12 years old and other sexual abuse charges that date from 2006.
“The defendant was originally convicted in this case in 2014 and sentenced to 33 years in prison. However, due to the 11-1 non-unanimous jury decision, the Oregon Supreme Court ordered the case to be retried,” said a statement from the DA’s office.
Although photographic evidence of the abuse was introduced by the state — evidence that was discovered on the defendant’s computer — case law didn’t allow for it to be presented at the time. That meant the state relied heavily on the testimony of the victim.
“Retrying this case, eleven years after the first conviction, was an excruciating ordeal,” said District Attorney Rayney Meisel, who tried the case. “The victim shouldered the weight of this case and was once again forced to relive her trauma in agonizing detail, reopening old wounds and inflicting new ones.”
Boyd’s sentencing is set for May 30.
