In recognition of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Oregon over a decade ago, the city of Beaverton is announcing free wedding and vow renewal ceremonies to coincide with the PRIDE Beaverton parade and celebration Sunday, June 29.
These ceremonies will be open to all couples, and those who want to participate must register and schedule their ceremony by June 15.
“June is a significant month for marriage equality because of several landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases that firmly establishes the right to marry no matter your race or who you love,” Beaverton Municipal Court Presiding Judge Juliet Britton said in a news release.
“These celebrations remind us that not too long ago, not every person in the U.S. had the legal right to marry,” Britton continued. “I’m thrilled to once again offer my officiating services to couples who want to celebrate their marriage during such a historic month for marriage equality,”
May 19, 2014, marked the day that same-sex marriage became legal in the state of Oregon. The news followed a U.S. federal district judge ruling that the state’s 2004 constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage violated the U.S. Constitution’s equal protection clause.
The city of Beaverton said all couples who are marrying must apply for and receive their state of Oregon marriage license from an Oregon county clerk at least three days prior to the ceremony unless they receive a waiver from the county clerk.
Wedding cake and decorations will be provided. Language interpretation will also be available.
